Here's a problem almost every wearable has, and almost none have solved.

Your heart is pounding. Your pulse is up, your body's working hard. But why? Are you anxious — or are you halfway through a run? To most fitness trackers, those two moments look nearly identical. Your heartbeat tells a hidden story.

Most people think heart rate is the whole picture — how fast your heart beats. But there's a deeper signal hiding underneath it called heart rate variability, or HRV: the tiny variations in time between each beat.

It sounds counterintuitive, but a healthy, relaxed nervous system produces more variation between beats, not less. When you're under genuine psychological stress, that variability tends to drop — your heart's rhythm becomes more rigid. Exercise and anxiety affect this signal in different ways. So HRV isn't just about how fast your heart is going; it's a window into why.

Your skin gives you away.

There's a second signal, and it's one you have no control over: skin conductance, sometimes called galvanic skin response.

When you experience stress, your body subtly activates your sweat glands — far below the level you'd ever notice — and that tiny shift changes how well your skin conducts electricity. It's involuntary and almost instant, often happening before your conscious mind even registers that you're stressed. It's one of the most honest signals your body produces. But here's the catch: exercise raises skin conductance too, through sweat. So on its own, this signal can be fooled — just like heart rate can.

A workout has a signature: elevated heart rate, rising skin conductance, and active movement, all in a pattern that says "exercise." Psychological stress has a different signature: the telltale HRV shift and a rapid skin-conductance response, but without the movement — your body is in turmoil while you sit perfectly still at your desk.

When a device reads all of these signals at once and looks at how they combine, it can finally do what a simple heart-rate reading never could: tell the difference between a hard run and a hard moment.
